HOW TO USE THE REFRACTOMETER:
Device calibration (water required)
Add a few drops of water to the prism to cover the surface and close the lid, avoiding air bubbles.
- Look into the refractometer lens while facing a light source.
- Check that the reading is 0. If not, adjust the device by screwing the calibration screw until the reading is 0.
- Wipe the prism with the cleaning wipe to prepare the device for the next reading.
- Make sure the prism is clean and there is nothing on its surface.
Determining the coolant concentration using the refractometer
Check the refractive index of the coolant. You will need to multiply the refractometer reading by this figure (e.g. coolant concentration = 5.0 (refractometer reading) * 1.1 (refractive index) = 5.5%).
- Add a few drops of coolant to the prism to cover the surface and close the lid, avoiding air bubbles.
- Look into the refractometer lens while facing a light source.
- Note the refractometer reading.
- Multiply the refractometer reading by the refractive index provided by the coolant supplier.
- Note the concentration of the coolant.
- Adjust the coolant concentration in the machine by adding coolant as needed.
- Wipe the prism with the cleaning wipe to prepare the device for the next reading.
- Make sure the prism is clean and there is nothing on its surface.
